Something that I learned in business is nothing ever gets, um, nothing ever gets bought unless it's sold. And as a therapist, we are so used to never [00:02:00] selling our services.
We are so used to people just automatically buying it because we are Um, taught from the university level that everything in health care runs on insurance. And I can tell you right now that insurance is a business and even that has to be sold. It's just sold in a different way. But if you are, if you're an occupational therapist and you want to open your own clinic, you want to open your own business.
Like I have clinic and I have to do certain things to attract people to come and buy my services because it's not automatic. And, Believe it or not, the world is changing and things are not automatic either. Like even for hospital systems and for other, um, other major clinics, they have different things going for them, but you can't compare yourself to them because you're not them.
You're not this big conglomerate. You're not this big, huge entity. You as a therapist, usually, um, and I'm [00:03:00] speaking for myself, but this may apply to you. If you're a therapist and you're looking to start your own thing, is that You're starting alone. You're starting with the amount of money that you have, right?
Um, you're starting with your skills and you're starting with your drive. And one of the most important things as therapists that we need to learn is how to have conversations about our services and, um, why somebody would need us or why someone would, you know, go out of their way to, you know, buy our services.
And it is not taught in the university level. It is never taught in any kind of clinical setting. Even if you work for a private entity, right? Even if you work for a private entity, they might not be doing this if they're taking insurance completely. So as a therapist. and you want to go on your own, like you want to do your own business, uh, get comfortable [00:04:00] with the idea of selling.
And in order for you to get comfortable with the idea of selling, you have to get comfortable being sold to. So, I am running a free live masterclass that I'm going to talk about business. It's all going to be business. Now I know I'm usually known as a hand therapy girl and I share a lot of clinical, um, knowledge and stuff like that.
I share that clinical knowledge because I want y'all people to see what amazing skills you have as an occupational therapist and open your own business. Right. Um, I started out with only my skills. Girl, that was all I had. I was, I thought I was a great fucking therapist and I was like screw these people because they were pissing me off and I wanted more for myself.
And I think if you're an occupational therapist and you want more for yourself, then give yourself a chance of, um, having your own business, right? [00:05:00] And it doesn't have to be like just hand therapy. You can have any kind of OT business. Look, outside of the clinic that I run, I also started an online educational company, right?
So if you have something that you think is really valuable and that people need in the world, then you have a business. You have a business idea. Sorry about that. You have a business idea to take that into business. One of the things that you have to get really comfortable with is telling people more about what you do and what problems you solve, right?
And then you have to, um, tell them how they can get it from you. And that's just, that's just simple selling. You're not selling something to someone who doesn't need it. I'm not selling my hand therapy to someone who doesn't have a hand problem. People will come to me, have a hand problem, and I want to tell them about what I can do to help them.[00:06:00]
But if I, if I don't tell them how I can help them and the benefit to them, They're not, they're not going to get it. They're not going to book a session, right? They're not going to book a paid session. They're not going to book a whole plan of care. So if you're skeptical about selling, you know, if you're skeptical about signing up for a free live masterclass that I'm doing, all I can tell you is that's totally safe.

If I don't like it or don't really need it, I don't buy it. Um, so much of it is, there's no pressure, you know, there's no pressure and there's no shame around it if you don't want it, you know, but you'll do yourself a disservice, you'll do yourself a disservice if you don't even show up to learn what is possible.
Um, so. If you want to start your business right now, right, right now, you want to start your business. We have, we essentially have three more three and a half, right? Three and a half more months. So my whole point of [00:08:00] doing it now is so that you can plan out for the rest of the year, what to do, right? What to do.
And if you've already gotten started, so I've talked to some people and they've already gotten started. But they're, you know, they got their first client and maybe they have their second client, but they're looking at like, Oh my God, what do I need to do now? Like, how do I keep this trajectory going and like make it pick up even more steam?

So I'm going to just share with you a little bit about what I'm doing so that you can create this for yourself.
And then by the end of it, you'll have a plan, right? By the end of it, we're going to have a plan for October, November, and December. What are you going to do in October? What are you going to do in November? What are you going to do in December? Right. So that you can like kick it off and get going. So, so yeah, that's essentially what I'm going to do.
And I just wanted to hop on and tell you if you're afraid because you're afraid of being sold to in order to [00:10:00] run a business and run a well and make money, You know, make money and keep the business going. I think one of the first things that we as healthcare providers, as occupational therapists, that we have to get comfortable with being sold to so that we can essentially learn how to do it so that we can tell more people about what we do and then sell our services essentially.
It's the only way to stay in business. I didn't make this shit up. This is how businesses work Um, and we were never taught this in ot school And we were never taught it.
